Protection

This glass artwork presents a shallow, umbrella-like form resting delicately on a central vertical rod, combining balance, tension, and ceremonial presence. The curved glass plane is richly decorated with vibrant geometric patterns in warm reds, oranges, yellows, and accents of blue, echoing Akan and kente-inspired textile motifs. The surface reads like woven cloth, yet its material fragility contrasts sharply with the visual density of the pattern.
The glass appears gently slumped, its edges lifting and dipping irregularly, suggesting movement, shelter, or a protective canopy. Light passes through the patterned surface, intensifying the colours and casting soft reflections that activate the surrounding space. The slender black rod functions both as a structural support and a symbolic axis, anchoring the work while giving it a ritual or totemic quality.
Overall, the piece transforms the language of traditional textiles into a sculptural glass object that speaks about protection, identity, and cultural memory. By suspending a familiar form between function and symbolism, rigidity and softness, the work invites contemplation on how heritage can be carried, reshaped, and re-presented through contemporary material practice.
